Theatre without borders – New technologies in performing arts / Scen utan gränser – Ny teknik inom scenkonsten

What a weekend! A trip to Helsinki, partly blurred due to a cold, a new test made by Henrik arrived in the mailbox on the way back, looking forward to unpack the file tomorrow but first some of the inspiration from the Monday session.

On Monday I, Marita, attended the seminar Theatre without borders – New technologies in performing arts at Hanasaari – the Swedish-Finnish Culture Centre in Espoo just outside Helsinki. A day filled with inspiration and great input.

The participants got to listen to a presentation from the Aalto University by Professor Dorita Hannah who gave a speech under the title Spatial Extensions and Vulnerable Bodies. Some new input and a load of things to look up during the week.

On the performing side the first presentation and speech was made by Simon Alexanderson and Filip Alexanderson from Cabaret Electrique. They are investigating and working with the fusion between motion capture and live performance. A bit like watching a cartoon, a puppet play and a “normal” theatre performance at the same time – very clever. 

We then got to meet some of the works by Sirqus Alfon and D1GIT presented by Erik Rosales. Erik also made a short live performance that spiced up the afternoon. Both Sirqus Alfon and D1GIT (were Erik teams up with Charlie Carper) create performances that have taken input from the maker-culture and thereby modify and hack existing technology to suit their goal. Brilliant work!

Before the coffee break the work by the artist-duo Lundahl & Seitl was presented by Christer Lundahl under the title The Viewer as Medium. Lundahl & Seitl has a slightly different approach as the build their artworks in what can be described as a viewer perspective were the viewer takes an essential and vital role in the work – an approach that brings some interesting philosophical points of view in focus. Very interesting!

After the coffee break the focus was put on the new performance technology when the Vimma project was presented. The Vimma project is interesting in many aspects as it seeks to develop new technology but also because the work takes place through workshops and in close communication with the performing arts.

Vilken helg! En resa till Helsingfors, delvis dimmig på grund av en förkylning, ett nytt test som Henrik gjort anlände i inboxen på väg hem, ser fram emot att packa upp filen imorgon men först lite inspiration från måndagens event.

I måndags deltog jag, Marita, i Scen utan gränser – Ny teknik inom scenkonsten på Hanaholmen – kulturcentrum för Sverige och Finland, Esbo. En dag fylld av inspiration och intryck.

Deltagarna fick lyssna på en presentation av professor Dorita Hannah vid universitetet i Aalto på temat Spatial Extensions and Vulnerable Bodies. Nya intryck och en massa saker att kolla upp under den kommande veckan.

Den första presentationen på framträdande sidan gjordes av Simon Alexanderson och Filip Alexanderson från Cabaret Electrique. De utforskar och arbetar med fusionen mellan motion capture och live performance. Det är lite som att se en tecknad film, en dockteater pjäs och en ”normal” teater akt på samma gång – mycket underfundigt.

Därefter fick vi stifta bekantskap med Sirqus Alfon och D1GIT genom en presentation av Erik Rosales. Erik lyste även upp eftermiddagen med ett kort live framträdande. Både Sirqus Alfon och D1GIT (D1GIT består av Erik och Charlie Carper) skapar framträdanden som har tagit inspiration från maker-kulturen och därmed modifierar och hackar befintlig teknik för att den ska passa ändamålet. Lysande!

Innan kaffepausen presenterades även artistduon Lundahl & Seitls arbete av Christer Lundahl under rubriken The Viewer as Medium. Lundahl & Seitl har en aningen annan infallsvinkel då de skapar sina verk, i vad som kan beskrivas som betraktarens perspektiv där betraktaren spelar en essentiell och viktig roll i verket – en infallsvinkel som lyfter några intressanta filosofiska tankar och sätter dem i fokus. Mycket intressant!

Efter kaffepausen sattes fokus på ny föreställningsteknik då Vimma projektet presenterades. Vimma projektet är intressant ur flera aspekter då arbetar med att utveckla ny teknik men även då arbetet genomförs via workshops och i nära dialog med scenkonstnärer.

Dagen avslutades med ett panel samtal med fokus på konstnärliga möjligheter och praktiska utmaningar med ny teknik.
