Theatre without borders – New technologies in performing arts / Scen utan gränser – Ny teknik inom scenkonsten

What a weekend! A trip to Helsinki, partly blurred due to a cold, a new test made by Henrik arrived in the mailbox on the way back, looking forward to unpack the file tomorrow but first some of the inspiration from the Monday session.

On Monday I, Marita, attended the seminar Theatre without borders – New technologies in performing arts at Hanasaari – the Swedish-Finnish Culture Centre in Espoo just outside Helsinki. A day filled with inspiration and great input.

The participants got to listen to a presentation from the Aalto University by Professor Dorita Hannah who gave a speech under the title Spatial Extensions and Vulnerable Bodies. Some new input and a load of things to look up during the week.

On the performing side the first presentation and speech was made by Simon Alexanderson and Filip Alexanderson from Cabaret Electrique. They are investigating and working with the fusion between motion capture and live performance. A bit like watching a cartoon, a puppet play and a “normal” theatre performance at the same time – very clever.

We then got to meet some of the works by Sirqus Alfon and D1GIT presented by Erik Rosales. Erik also made a short live performance that spiced up the afternoon. Both Sirqus Alfon and D1GIT (were Erik teams up with Charlie Carper) create performances that have taken input from the maker-culture and thereby modify and hack existing technology to suit their goal. Brilliant work!

Before the coffee break the work by the artist-duo Lundahl & Seitl was presented by Christer Lundahl under the title The Viewer as Medium. Lundahl & Seitl has a slightly different approach as the build their artworks in what can be described as a viewer perspective were the viewer takes an essential and vital role in the work – an approach that brings some interesting philosophical points of view in focus. Very interesting!

After the coffee break the focus was put on the new performance technology when the Vimma project was presented. The Vimma project is interesting in many aspects as it seeks to develop new technology but also because the work takes place through workshops and in close communication with the performing arts.

Finally the day was closed through a panel discussion with the focus on the artistic possibilities and practical challenges with new technologies.

Vilken helg! En resa till Helsingfors, delvis dimmig på grund av en förkylning, ett nytt test som Henrik gjort anlände i inboxen på väg hem, ser fram emot att packa upp filen imorgon men först lite inspiration från måndagens event.

I måndags deltog jag, Marita, i Scen utan gränser – Ny teknik inom scenkonsten på Hanaholmen – kulturcentrum för Sverige och Finland, Esbo. En dag fylld av inspiration och intryck.

Deltagarna fick lyssna på en presentation av professor Dorita Hannah vid universitetet i Aalto på temat Spatial Extensions and Vulnerable Bodies. Nya intryck och en massa saker att kolla upp under den kommande veckan.

Den första presentationen på framträdande sidan gjordes av Simon Alexanderson och Filip Alexanderson från Cabaret Electrique. De utforskar och arbetar med fusionen mellan motion capture och live performance. Det är lite som att se en tecknad film, en dockteater pjäs och en ”normal” teater akt på samma gång – mycket underfundigt.

Därefter fick vi stifta bekantskap med Sirqus Alfon och D1GIT genom en presentation av Erik Rosales. Erik lyste även upp eftermiddagen med ett kort live framträdande. Både Sirqus Alfon och D1GIT (D1GIT består av Erik och Charlie Carper) skapar framträdanden som har tagit inspiration från maker-kulturen och därmed modifierar och hackar befintlig teknik för att den ska passa ändamålet. Lysande!

Innan kaffepausen presenterades även artistduon Lundahl & Seitls arbete av Christer Lundahl under rubriken The Viewer as Medium. Lundahl & Seitl har en aningen annan infallsvinkel då de skapar sina verk, i vad som kan beskrivas som betraktarens perspektiv där betraktaren spelar en essentiell och viktig roll i verket – en infallsvinkel som lyfter några intressanta filosofiska tankar och sätter dem i fokus. Mycket intressant!

Efter kaffepausen sattes fokus på ny föreställningsteknik då Vimma projektet presenterades. Vimma projektet är intressant ur flera aspekter då arbetar med att utveckla ny teknik men även då arbetet genomförs via workshops och i nära dialog med scenkonstnärer.

Dagen avslutades med ett panel samtal med fokus på konstnärliga möjligheter och praktiska utmaningar med ny teknik.

Applications and inspiration plus feedback

Igår åkte jag till Köpenhamn för att träffa Maria Tsakiris, seniorrådgivare på Nordiska kulturfonden och för att delta i informationsmötet gällande Digital 2015-2016.

Köpenhamn välkomnade med en grå himmel och duggregn men inne på fondens kontor sken solen och stämningen var på topp. CoScene och jag fick en massa användbar och bra feedback, inspiration och vi hann även nätverka en del. Nu vet vi hur vi ska göra ansökan på ett bra sätt och på vilket sätt vi ska fokusera och förhoppningsvis nå vårt/våra mål.

Vägen till ansökan är fortfarande en bra bit bort och kräver massor av jobb men jag tror vi fixar det och vi kommer att göra vårt bästa för att få det stöd vi behöver för att få CoScene upp och köra.

Yesterday I went to Copenhagen to meet with the Nordic Cultural Fund‘s senior advisor, Maria Tsakiris, and to join the information meeting regarding Digital 2015-2016.

Copenhagen welcomed with a grey sky and drizzling rain, but the sunshine and the bright mood was not lacking at the Fund’s office. CoScene and I got a load of useable and great feedback, inspiration and did some networking. Now we know how to get the application done in a good way, in what way we should focus and hopefully reach our goal(s).

The road to the application is still way ahead and the work is massive, but I think we will get there and we will do our best to get the grant that we need to get the CoScene up and running.

Bärbar teknik – varför inte? / Wearable tech – why not?

Bärbar teknik har funnits ett tag nu och lösningarna förfinas och utvecklas. På Mashables sida kan du läsa om några av de senaste.

Då vi började skissa på CoScene så lekte vi med tanken att skapa något som bärs, t.ex. ett armband eller något lika enkelt. Men även om bärbar teknik är kul och verkligen genialt så föreställer vi oss CoScene något annorlunda. Ut användarperspektivet vill vi att CoScene ska vara direkt. Du ska kunna agera utan tillprovning av något klädesplagg. Ur ett filosofiskt perspektiv ska CoScene inte lägga till ytterligare något till människans kropp. Det ska inte vara en accessoar utan snarare erbjuda en ny aspekt av världen. Att lägga till digital klädsel, även ett enkelt armband, förändrar en persons framträdande, då det blir en förlängning av kroppen. Visionen med CoScene är att förena avståndet mellan människa och teknik, att göra teknik tillgänglig och till en ”naturlig” del av miljön som personen agerar i. Att agera innebär inte nödvändigtvis som skådespelare utan även som upptäcktsresande, som besökare och naturligtvis som konstnär, performance-konstnär, dansare, osv.

Konstruktionen av CoScene kan göras på olika sätt och att testa olika lösningar och kombinationer är nödvändigt – och kul. Mängder av research är nödvändig och att knyta kontakt med rätt personer. Kul, kul, kul!

Wearable technology has been around for a while and the solutions are being refined and suited to fit. On Mashable you can read about some of the latest.

In the beginning when we started to define the idea of CoScene we thought of the possibility to create something that was worn as bracelet or something as simple. But as much as wearable technology is fun and a truly brilliant thing we image CoScene slightly different. On the user level we want CoScene to be hands-on. You shall be able act straight ahead without any fitting of a garment. On a philosophical level CoScene shall not add another thing to the human body. It shall not be an accessory but rather offer a new aspect of the world. To add a digital clothing, or even just a bracelet does change the human performance, as it becomes an extension of the body. With CoScene the vision is to bridge a gap between human and technology, to make technology accessible and a “natural” part of the environment in which the person is acting. By acting not necessarily acting as a actor but also as an explorer, as a visitor and of course also as an artist, performer, dancer and so on.

The construction of CoScene can be done in different ways and trying different solutions and combinations is necessary – and a lot of fun. Tons of research is necessary and connecting to the right people. Fun, fun, fun!
